Sam Duncan

Sam has spent two weeks working at The Nwext Step Trust as his work placement from school, as he is considering a career in the care sector.

This work experience has been an ey-opener. It has taught me a lot of things that I needed to know before I left school. It has made me realise that I want to come into this sort of profession and maybe do some voluntary work in this area. It has been a fantastic experience meeting all the service users and seeing their progression by using the website and seeing them now. Helen has taught me that at times this work is really challenging and sometimes it can be the most enjoyable thing. I have learnt the different types of reactions that service users do. Depending on their needs I know they react in a different way eg for eye pointing or P.E.C. which Matthew depends on. It showed me reality and how the service users rely on the carers help. I thank all the staff at Next Step Trust for showing me that this is the right career move for me and showing me how this sort of caring can change a service user's life so easily and this type of job is so rewarding. It takes hard work and dedication but I'm sure when I leave school, I will come into this sort of job and I thank everyone at Next Step Trust for that.
